Cawongla Community Centre Reopens to Enthusiastic Crowd

On Saturday, June 1, 2024, the Cawongla Community Centre officially reopened its doors to the community, drawing an enthusiastic crowd and marking a new chapter for the historic site.

The charming timber cottage, situated next to Cawongla Preschool in the village’s heart, once served as a teacher’s residence, later becoming a lively community hub before falling into disuse.

A couple of years ago, an enthusiastic group of residents formed a Steering Group, determined to revive the space. Their dedication led to various sporadic classes over the time, but activity was minimal. To raise awareness and encourage more permanent, ongoing events – they organised an official reopening event, which was a resounding success. Over 100 residents attended, viewing art from 10 local artists, including preschool children’s artwork. The day featured a free sausage sizzle, cakes sold by donation, live music, and a chance for the community to come together.

Kye Walker opened the day with a Welcome to Country, followed by speeches from the Preschool Director Stephen Gallen, Councillor Janet Wilson and Graham Welch on behalf of the Steering Group Volunteers.

The residents and volunteers behind this revival include Penny May, Jolanda Moyle, Daina Walker, Graham Welch, Tamara Head and Eva Henley. Their shared vision has been to create a welcoming place for community interaction and activities.

An ideas board at the centre allowed people to suggest activities they’d like to see, with popular ideas including drumming, ukulele sessions, table tennis, potluck dinners, and weaving.

The reopening of the Cawongla Community Centre stands as a testament to community spirit and collective effort, promising a vibrant future for local gatherings and events.

What’s happening at the Cawongla Community now? As a result of the reopening event, awareness of the space has significantly increased. Now, the centre hosts an ongoing African Drumming Circle every fortnight starting on July 12th. Weekly Pilates classes are occurring, and there are upcoming workshops on social media. Additionally, there are hopes to start a community garden in the yard and to hold annual community events.

The Cawongla Community Centre is equipped with Wi-Fi, reverse cycle air conditioning, kitchen facilities and is available for hire at a minimal fee.
